Reports to: Transportation Director/Operations Manager

Primary Purpose:

Manage and supervise dispatch communications and operations. Organize, coordinate and schedule equipment and personnel in support of pupil transportation, including request for information and maintain departmental data base

 

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Some College preferred
  • Possess and maintain all eligibility requirements to operate a school bus for NISD
  • Knowledge of district boundaries, schools and roadways
  • Direct and lead others in emergency situations
  • Ability to articulate transportation related issues
  • Able to work effectively and cooperatively with other department staff as well as community stakeholders and individuals from other agencies
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics and statistics, office productivity suites and data entry
  • Skill in preparing, presenting, and reviewing verbal and written information and reports
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work responsibilities
  • Bus driving experience preferred
  • Prior experience as a school district dispatcher preferred

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

Vehicle Operation:

  1. Operate any vehicle as needed on any route
  2. Operate school bus in a manner consistent with department expectations and requirements
  3. Manage student discipline effectively

 

Management of Administrative, Fiscal and/or Facilities Functions:

  1. Responsible for communicating with campuses regarding Transportation Services
  2. Review incoming requests for safety observations and stop changes in compliance with district/departmental policies and established best practices.
  3. Ensure vehicles and drivers are in place and on time for routes, field trips and special events.
  4. Manage and track leave request and absences for drivers and monitors.
  5. Ensure a regular flow of requested information and records for individuals and department.
  6. Assume duties of communications operator when necessary.
  7. Ensure all routes are covered for both a.m. and p.m. routes and keep in direct contact with the West Operations Facility to inform them of the status of buses.
  8. Coordinate vehicle repair reports with Maintenance Manager and Operations Manager.
  9. Ensure drivers maintain current updated route descriptions and seating charts.
  10. Maintain a current inventory of all fixed assets within program.
  11. Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all transportation equipment.

  1. Analyze critical needs in assigned areas and work collaboratively to implement and improve programs and training options for department.

  1. Participate in professional development that increases effectiveness and improves District

 

School/Community Relations:

  1. Interface with governmental agencies, businesses and civic organizations, and the community to provide needed information and to promote the District's initiatives.

 

Policy, Reports, and Laws:

  1. Assist in monitoring district compliance with laws, regulations, and/or rules related to federal, state, local governmental agencies, and other practical general industry guidelines with regard to employee and transportation issues.
  2. Compile, maintain, file, and present all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required in transportation area including state financial reports.
  3. Manage data to complete monthly and yearly reporting, goals, and benchmarking information.
  4. Follow District and department policies and procedures.

 

Other Responsibilities

Supervisory Responsibilities:  

Supervise & Coordinate drivers and attendants during routes and field trips

 

Working Conditions: 

Stressful, fast paced and changing environment. Moderate physical stamina required. Continual sitting, reaching, and repetitive hand and arm motions. Several hours at a time inside a vehicle that magnifies dips and bumps in a roadway. Climbing up and down stairs. Work outside and inside at night and day. Moderate exposure to extreme temperature (hot/cold) and weather. Exposure to vehicle fumes, machinery and moving vehicles. Multiple types of foot and road surfaces. After hour duty requirements to complete task and department goals.
