Primary Purpose:

Ride buses and help driver ensure safe and orderly transportation of students with disabilities

Qualifications:

• Must be 18 years of age
• Ability to move actively through large numbers of people in a limited amount of space
• Ability to act responsibly
• High School Diploma / GED
• Ability to follow verbal instructions and communicate effectively
• Ability to complete Monitor Evaluation showing capabilities of fulling job description
• Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment
• Ability to work well with children with disabilities
  Ability to manage student behavior
• Ability to communicate effectively with others
• School experience preferred

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Student Management:

1. Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and passenger rules and regulations
2. Supervise students as they board and leave bus and cross street
3. Take children into building and help them find their way
4. Learn and adapt to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs
5. Maintain discipline and use effective behavior management control over groups of students
6. Report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator and communicate with teachers and parents regarding student’s behavior when warranted
7. Perform emergency evacuation of students on bus when the situation warrants it
8. Lift and carry students with disabilities on and off the bus according to their individual needs

Routes & Schedules:

9. Become familiar with all routes to and from school campus to be of assistance to driver
10. Maintain an updated route schedule

 

Safety:

11. Supervise use of seatbelts, harnesses, or car seats by students
12. Follow emergency procedures and help driver administer first aid, if necessary
13. Operate equipment according to established safety procedures
14. Follow established procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including:
    • Lifting
    • Assisting students
    • Other duties as assigned

 

Other:

15. Become familiar with and follow procedures established by transportation and special education offices
16. Help driver keep bus clean
17. Work irregular hours (Split Shift)
18. Perform other duties as assigned

• Frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, noise, and vehicle fumes

  • Fire Extinguisher

 

Posture:

• Prolonged sitting, frequent standing and twisting, occasional kneeling/squatting, bending, stooping, pushing and pulling

Motion:

• Moderate walking
• Frequent climbing of stairs
• Grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension, and reaching

 

Mental Demands:

• Ability to read

• Frequent reaching overhead and horizontally to reach and place materials/equipment in certain areas

• Ability to secure wheelchairs as needed
