Primary Purpose:
Ride buses and help driver ensure safe and orderly transportation of students with disabilities
Qualifications:
- Must be 18 years of age
- Ability to move actively through large numbers of people in a limited amount of space
- Ability to act responsibly
- High School Diploma / GED
- Ability to follow verbal instructions and communicate effectively
- Ability to complete Monitor Evaluation showing capabilities of fulling job description
- Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment
- Ability to work well with children with disabilities
Ability to manage student behavior
- Ability to communicate effectively with others
- School experience preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Student Management:
- Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and passenger rules and regulations
- Supervise students as they board and leave bus and cross street
- Take children into building and help them find their way
- Learn and adapt to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs
- Maintain discipline and use effective behavior management control over groups of students
- Report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator and communicate with teachers and parents regarding student’s behavior when warranted
- Perform emergency evacuation of students on bus when the situation warrants it
- Lift and carry students with disabilities on and off the bus according to their individual needs
Routes & Schedules:
- Become familiar with all routes to and from school campus to be of assistance to driver
- Maintain an updated route schedule
Safety:
- Supervise use of seatbelts, harnesses, or car seats by students
- Follow emergency procedures and help driver administer first aid, if necessary
- Operate equipment according to established safety procedures
- Follow established procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including:
- Lifting
- Assisting students
- Other duties as assigned
Other:
- Become familiar with and follow procedures established by transportation and special education offices
- Help driver keep bus clean
- Work irregular hours (Split Shift)
- Perform other duties as assigned
